Engineyard : Amazon EC2 Maintenance – Maintenance

What to do when such email you receive from Engineyard. Normally what is going on and what to do is clearly explained by Engineyard email. However, we might not gather enough courage to mess with production server instances.

Hi,

We have received the following notification from Amazon that one or more of your Engine Yard Cloud instances may be affected by a maintenance period:

i-4a2ea87f – util instance in the production environment.
* To replace a utility server terminate the specific degraded instance by clicking Terminate icon on the dashboard, and then add a new instance, using the most recent snapshot.

Further details regarding the dates and duration of the maintenance should be available in the original message included below.

Please terminate and rebuild the instance(s) if you do not wish to risk the instance(s) being inaccessible during the maintenance window.

To replace a degraded instance

If the degraded instance is:

  • A single-instance (or solo) environment, then terminate and rebuild the whole environment.
  • An application slave, then terminate the specific degraded instance by clicking Terminate icon on the dashboard, and then add a new instance.
  • An application master, then promote an app slave to be app master.
  • A database replica, then terminate the specific degraded instance by clicking Terminate icon on the dashboard, and then add a new instance.
  • A database master, then promote a database replica to be database master.
  • A utility instance, then terminate the specific degraded instance by clicking Terminate icon on the dashboard, and then add a new instance, using the most recent snapshot.
